Who is Medicare for?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are:

  1. U.S. Citizens and legal residents aged 65 or older.
  2. Certain younger people with disabilities who are under age 65 are eligible if they have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or certain Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) disability benefits for at least 24 months.
  3. People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure) requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD.
  4. If they have ALS there is no waiting period for Medicare.

Why do I need Medicare?

As people get older accidents happens and serious illness is more common, therefore, it is extremely important to have Medicare health coverage if you don't have any other health insurance. Most Americans cannot afford to go without it because health care costs can be financially catastrophic without other resources.  People who are eligible for Medicare need to enroll during the suggested enrollment periods with Social Security (SSA) or else be subject to late enrollment penalties, in addition to the standard Part B monthly premium amount. If you have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years or if you have a spouse to qualify under, you can enroll for Part A Hospital coverage. Not retired yet and still working?  Part B enrollment can be delayed if you are on an employer's group plan.

Part A - Hospital Stays

Part B - Doctor Visits

Part C - Medicare Advantage

Part D - Prescription Drugs

Why do I need Medicare supplement plans?

Original Medicare Part A & Part B does not cover all health care costs. Part B covers 80% of doctors' visits etc. A Supplement (Medigap) plan cover the other 20%. These Supplement plans “fill the gaps” by covering the co-pays, coinsurance, and some deductibles that Original Medicare does not cover. If you want Prescription drug coverage you will need to purchase a separate stand-alone Part D plan.

Most Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) includes prescription drug (Part D), dental, vision and hearing coverage, plus much more. These additional benefit options go beyond what Original Medicare Part A & B provide. Also known as MAPD, these Part C plans start at $0.00 monthly premiums and have $0.00 – low copays, etc. Private insurance carriers manage these plans and not the federal government.  You cannot have a MAPD and Supplement plan together at the same time.
